The Joseph E. and Grace Needham Pogue Scholarship has a long history of supporting students who work at the University to promote greater diversity and understanding.
Students chosen for the program demonstrate exceptional strengths in one or more areas as well as a commitment to diversity.
Apply for admission by the Early Action deadline to be considered for the scholarship. Pogue Scholars are ineligible to apply to the UNC Scholars Program.

About the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, or simply Carolina) is a North Carolina public research university. The University of North Carolina system’s flagship is classified as a Public Ivy, or a public institution that provides an academic experience comparable to that of an Ivy League university.
After being chartered in 1789, the university began enrolling students in 1795, making it one of the country’s oldest public universities.
Among the claimants, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the only one that held classes and graduated students in the eighteenth century as a public university.

About the Pogue Scholarship
The Pogue Scholarship is given to students who have excelled academically in high school and demonstrated a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their communities. Pogue Scholars are ineligible to apply to the UNC Scholars Program. Pogue Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at Carolina (eight semesters).
Program:
- $10,000 scholarship for North Carolina residents, and tuition, fees, room and board for out of state students.
- Faculty mentoring and a cohort of fellow scholars.
- Opportunities to gather for social and intellectual activities throughout their time at Carolina.
