The University of Liverpool’s Hodgson Law Scholarship Program aims to advance the education and training of lawyers who may work for the benefit of Merseyside.

The Trustees want Hodgson Law Scholars to benefit from education in Liverpool to foster intellectual growth among promising law students and to maintain close ties with the City of Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region.

This scholarship is available to all prospective overseas candidates (i.e., non-UK, non-EU) intending to pursue a postgraduate taught degree in law at the University of Liverpool on an annual basis.

A brief history of the University of Liverpool

About Hodgson Law Scholarship

The Hodgson Scholarships owe their foundation to the Will of Elizabeth Hodgson, widow of the Liverpool Solicitor Joseph Hodgson, who expressed a desire to strengthen the schooling and education of attorneys who would work for the advantage of Merseyside.

The Trustees want Hodgson Law Scholars to benefit from education in Liverpool to foster intellectual growth among promising law students and to maintain close ties with the City of Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region.

LLM Scholars will be chosen for a full-time year of study. The application for the LLM Scholarship is separate and distinct from the application for a place on the postgraduate degree course. You must first apply to the Liverpool University Selection Committee for a scholarship related to a place at Liverpool University before applying for a Scholarship.

Applicants who are legal European Union or United Kingdom residents are not eligible for the Hodgson Law Scholarships. Hodgson Law Scholars will be ineligible to apply for other University of Liverpool scholarships or bursaries.

The Hodgson Trustees will pay all University tuition fees on behalf of the Hodgson Law Scholars. In addition, each Hodgson Law Scholar will receive a maintenance allowance of £9,140 .

Eligibility for Hodgson Law Scholarship

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the following:

  •  Academic success.
  • Applicants must have completed or be in the final year of completing a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree with a minimum GPA of 2.1 (UK Upper Second) or equivalent and an excellent command of the English language.
  • Demonstrated interest in legal and public service that will benefit the Liverpool City Region.
  • Possibility and desire for future leadership.
  • That they are unable to pursue a postgraduate degree at either institution.

Documents required for application

  • Transcripts and certificates of completion (including English language qualifications).
  • A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate that has been certified.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate from a relevant institution (when available).
  • Two references attesting to the candidate’s academic ability to pursue a postgraduate law degree and one attesting to the candidate’s good character (no reference from the candidate’s family is permitted).
  • Two passport-sized photographs of the candidate certified by a suitably responsible professional person known to the candidate as a true likeness of the candidate (e.g., lawyer, teacher, doctor).
  • An application essay
